A very special performance of I’ll Tell My Ma , to mark Mother’s Day will take place outside the Burnavon between 1.30 and 2.00 pm on Saturday 29th March. when all the children involved in the Traditional Music in Schools project come together to play for the first time!
Just over seven years ago local musician Donald Canavan took his first steps towards fulfilling his dream of teaching as many young children as he possibly could to play traditional music. A typical working week for Donald is spent tutoring over 200 children in the tin whistle, flute, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo. In fact it is estimated that since the project began in 2007 he has now put close to 500 children from as young as Primary 4 through his hands!
Small groups of children from the Traditional Music project have played in public on many occasions in the past – they are regulars at the Winter Craft Fair and the St Patrick’s Concert at the Burnavon. But this weekend takes things to another level when all 220 children will meet up to play together in the Burn Road.
As you can imagine, all the kids have been practising their programme very hard for this special record setting mass group performance. So if you are anywhere in the area on Saturday 29th, come along and give them your support. It is sure to be quite a spectacle and an apt celebration of one of the district’s most successful music projects!
